HEY PEOPLE! WELCOME TO THE 2ND BLOG POST!

So we’re still tackling wash day. Now that we infused some good ‘ol moisture and nutrients in our strands and let it marinate for some time using our 10 Easy Prepoo Steps we applied in our 1st blog post, now we can move forward and shampoo.

Some naturalistas are against shampoo period, or frequent shampooing, because of its stripping agents. These naturals tend to “co-wash” rather than shampoo. Co-washing is Conditioner-Washing, when one uses conditioner to cleanse and moisturize their hair. Cowashing is like a person hopping in the shower, rinsing their body with water, and then hoping out to apply a beautiful smelling lotion on top of their unwashed body. This is not an efficient cleansing routine, because there was no cleansing soap involved in the routine to wash the dirt away. This is why some naturals who co-wash frequently recognize this and eventually revert to shampoo at least once a month or biweekly to cleanse away all the dirt, grime and build up from the constant co-washing and moisturizing hair products, which is great! Moisture is key for Type 3-4 naturals.

Our hair needs to be cleansed weekly or biweekly (sometimes daily for our type 2 & 3 natural sisters who have more oily hair than the type 4 hair sisters, due to their looser curl pattern that allow their natural oils to travel down their entire hair shaft a bit more easier and faster. For our type 2-3 hair natural sisters, washing and conditioning daily, or whenever the hair is soiled, is safer to do than for the type 4 hair who needs to retain as much moisture as possible on a daily basis). We will discuss hair typing in a later blog. Now of days, there are co-wash cleansers that have cleansing agents which in essence are shampoos. That’s great! Just be sure to read the label of the shampoo you buy (all products for that matter), and that it is a non-sulfate shampoo if at all possible. Also, try to stay away from products that have ammonia, which have a high pH balance that can strip our hair. It is best to lean towards the low pH shampoos.

If you use regular shampoo with sulfates, be sure to prepoo your hair so that your hair does not swell and soak all the sulfates too much, but swells just enough to let some cleansing work on your hair and scalp.

A clean and stimulated scalp are requisites for a healthy scalp, and diet, exercise and good hygiene ensure hair growth. Give your self a good massage during this cleansing step. You owe it to yourself, or whoever’s hair you are doing.

Now we’re ready to hop in the shower so that we can multi-task and wash our body also. Or you can bend under a sink old school style if we’ve already washed our body. If you are in housing where you obtain a high water bill, then the latter option helps preserve water. LET’S GET STARTED!

STEP 1
Rinse your hair under warm running water.

The warm water will open your cuticles and soften your hair to prepare for cleansing. Make sure all your strands are soaked with warm water. In some areas, you may be blessed with having soft running water, which is ideal for hair care, rather than hard harsh running water. At the end of the day, work with what you’ve got; you’ll be all right.

STEP 2
Come out from under the water and grab your preferred moisturizing non-sulfate shampoo to start scrubbing & massaging.
This is so relaxing. You may turn off your water as this is going to preserve it for this step. Close your eyes while shampooing, so that the cleansing agents don’t seep into them and burn your eyeballs, causing injury to your eyes. There are shampoo visors for children to make their shampoo experience a bit more comfortable. Head over to the Beauty Supply Store to purchase it. Apply the shampoo, at least two quarter sized amount, to only your scalp. Use the pads of your fingers, and not your nails, to scrub and massage your scalp. Using our nails can harm our scalp with cuts if we are too rough. You may also use your knuckles to scrub if you’d like.

Our hair, especially if it is on the more woolly (Type 4) side, needs to stay stretched at all times if at all possible, to lessen tangles, thus lessening breakage. This is why we have our hair in either braids or twists to keep our strands stretched. Braids are typically done for shorter her up to neck length. Twists are typically done for hair past the neck length. We braid/twist from the mid-hair shaft down, and twist at the very ends to secure them from unraveling in the water.

Non-sulfate shampoos are less stripping of our natural sebum oil that our scalp produces. Moisturizing shampoos aid with manageability, less tangles, during our wash-day processes, and also lessens dry scalp and hair.

We can even go the natural route for when we have excess build up on our hair. Use a 1/3 apple cider vinegar and 2/3 water solution to cleanse your hair. This solution should not be used on a regular basis because it can irritate our scalp with over much use. We can also use the medicinal health benefits of African Black Soap also to cleanse our hair for a more natural route. Hopefully we can upload some DIY videos soon…comment below if that’s something you would like.

STEP 3
Rinse out the shampoo by letting the water run on your head.

You want to continue scrubbing and massaging your hair while the shampoo is rinsing out. Squeeze your twists repeatedly between your hands to ensure that your hair shaft is cleansing and rinsing out well.

STEP 4
Repeat Steps 2-3.

Wash your hair with the shampoo once more to ensure cleanliness. Squeeze your twists repeatedly between your hands to ensure that your hair shaft is thoroughly cleansed. If you are using a cleansing shampoo as a deep cleanse, you may take apart one braid/twist at a time to be sure that each strand is lathered, cleansed and rinsed. Remember we want our scalp to be directly cleansed more so than our hair strands, to unclog our scalp of dirt, to help hair growth. Eventually, the surfactant (cleaning foaming agents) will find its way to the strands and cleanse the hair, and also during the rinsing steps.

STEP 5
Once you’re all done with steps 2-4, you can continue your body wash regimen, then grab your T-shirt-towel to dry your hair.
You can continue your daily body wash regimen as normal to get all the shampoo and dirty water off of your body. A regular towel is overly drying to the hair and can cause frizz. Frizz can cause more tangles at the root. Use an old t-shirt instead. Or you can check out the new trendy T-shirt Towel at the Beauty Supply Store!
